microsoft word logo iconMicrosoft word, one of the most basic software that you require in your Windows based system to open your daily documents. The title of this post looks bit horrible but its true, Microsoft is banned from selling MS Word in United states. Microsoft can not sale or import MS word in US.

Toronto-based company i4i Inc won the patent war against Microsoft. Actually i4i Inc own a patent of reading the documents formatted with XML (Extended Markup Language). But the Microsoft word have capacity to read such documents which is against the patent policies.

Now, Microsoft can not sell or import the Microsoft word software which have capability of opening .XML, .DOCX or DOCM files (XML files) containing custom XML. XML allows users to customize the format of word-processing documents, enabling them to be read by various word-processing programs. Court forced Microsoft to pay over $290 million to i4i Inc. !!

You can read more and detailed information about this incident here at Seattle PI.This page contains legal details about this petition and also contains the judge’s decision in depth.

That’s some bad news. But, as OpenOffice.org is quite robust I prefer using it rather than MS Office.

Open source is great, but what happen with Microsoft is bad. Hope Indian user not going to face it in near future as they are addicted on MS Office and very few of them aware of free alternative.

How can Microsoft sell, MS Office without Ms-Word? It is bad news for customers. Now, we have to purchase MS Office from Microsoft and Word from any other company.
