Design Our Indian Rupee currency Symbol and win Prize.

11.03.09 | 313 Responses
ADS BY GOOGLE

currency symbolsMost of the international countries have there own currency symbol like $ (US Dollar), £ (Great Britain pound), € (Euro), ¥ (Japanese Yen), etc etc. There is no official or special symbol for our Indian currency. Generally we use Rs., or INR, or रु or रुपया (Hindi) to represent the Indian rupees. What if you get a chance to design the Indian currency symbol ?

Ministry of Finance, India, recently started a competition for designers or general public to design the Indian currency symbol. So if you have artist in you then start designing the symbol.

To get more detailed information about this competition just download this PDF from website of the Ministry of Finance, India.

Source : Ministry of Finance, India.

Last date for submittion of entries is 15th April 2009.

According to PDF,

The symbol has to be either in the Indian National Language Script or a visual representation but should be applicable to the standard computer keyboard.

So be ready for new symbol, will it change the current structure of keyboards ? or it will be assigned through ASCII codes !!
This will be interesting to see for people like me :) . As this may create evolution in keyboards system.

I disagree with your point that it should be religion free as the symbol is for Indian Currency, and India is a country of every religion.
So instead of giving attention to just one religion the symbol must treat all religions equally showing the “Unity in Diversity” of our country.
Here is one such example I found online:

    vamp.asdf.googlepages.com/coexist.jpg

I personally like this symbol and have been using this on many of my project files and print jobs…

    Great to here that …
I was knowing about that …
To say something about this ,
the restrictions on the creation of the symbol are some tough or harsh I should say ….But on the other hand
it should be there as the standard keyboard is to be used always by common user ….

In many of the new keyboards there are new buttons added which are the currency symbols like $,€ etc …

I have these on my laptops keyboard …
but If the new symbol is designed with the help of ASCII codes ..
then it will again difficult for the manufactures to add another key to its keyboard …

As currently most of the companies are trying to reduce the keys on the keyboard …

So the creator needs to be that much innovative that he can create the symbol from the given keys ….

I think the currency symbol creator need to be a computer freak …..

Chetan you should try :) …..

2.5 Lack Prize…i think i must try, but i am not a designer.
But due to keyboard restrictions it MUST be designed by some computer professional.

    Ψ
    Greek Capital Letter PSI
    Character code 03A8 (Unicode-hex)
    ( India bound to win)
India with its raised hands, moving forward eagerly and delightfully to be no.1 in the world . (something about the stance of the letter suggests that). This also gives a suggestion of the Trisul , the symbol that shows the Hindu character & culture of the country and it also suggests that India is armed to move forward fighting and removing all blocks and slights in its path. be it terrorism, fundamentalism or snobbery . What ever it is , India cannot be disregarded by the World again. An apt symbol for the Indian Rupee in the modern scenario.

    Ф
    Cyrillic Capital Letter EF
    Character code 0424 (Unicode-hex)

India –Stands out in the World with its unique culture and character . Two C’s symbolizing Culture and Character facing each other, holding together or uniting India into One, making it whole Symbolizing – Unity in Variety – and raising it as No.1 in the World. The apt symbol for Indian Rupee which will surely be the No.1 in the future.

    ф
    Cyrillic Small Letter EF
    Character code 0444 (Unicode-hex)

I couldn’t find any thing on the ministry of finance website related to this contest.
The closest one I could find was

    http://finmin.nic.in/the_ministry/dept_eco_affairs/currency_coinage/cc_index.html

However it did not have the logo and header like the other pages and departments of the ministry of finance, India.
Could anyone confirm if this contest is genuine? The agencies publicizing this competition please take this responsibility and I request the Ministry of Finance to give more publicity for this contest in their own website, so that we participants do not get confused. A contact mail id to ask queries related to this competition would help. Thanks

My favorite Symbol for Indian Rupee is

    ≡

Three horizontal lines like they have in Indian flag.

    ≡100/-

    ≡1000/-

Easy to type on keyboard even :

    ALT + X + 8801

    ≡ Symbolize

    Unity, Harmony, Solidarity, Strength

You will find whatever, you suggested as part of it, and many more like Swastika symbol, King’s face used in ancient currencies, Ashok Chakra, Number 0, letters e.g, R,S,P,U,E,I etc. even र or रु, holy signs like sacred kalash and also the sign of stability along with its negotiation with foriegn currencies with the use of horizontal bar having two open arms facing upward & downward to keep up with market fluctuation and finally as a whole visual representation of an emperor with one sword facing upward in right hand to fight enemies and the other one in left hand facing downward to hole peace in his country but yet it is so simple!

Hi Zeal, thanks for your remarks. However, I think it’s not at all complicated as it consists of 1 P, 1 O and 1 horizontal S. It is a three Stroke symbol, whereas $, £ are two stroke symbols and €, ¥ are of three strokes.
Even, this symbol can be written in a single stroke by starting from the downside of P , followed by the O in anti-clockwise direction and finally the horizontal S. Moreover, the pattern is so unique that ambiguity will never arise with other letters/ currencies/numbers even if written carelessly or in too hurry :)

Did you know 1/4 page of advertisement took Rs. 25,000 (Local), Rs. 50,000 (State level) and Rs. 75,000 (National) newspaper (Approximately). You just calculate 500 newspaper with Rs. 50,000 each for single day advertisement. Rs. 50,000 X 500 news paper = ??????????
    Amount is Rs. 25000000

This is for your kind referance boys

    My design too is shortlisted.
The design presented consists of two parts, the number “zero” and the alphabet “R” embedded inside the zero. Now when we peruse the design, the zero there represents India’s phenomenal contribution to the world. The design was done considering one the major historical contributions of India. The invention of the number “zero” although an important landmark in the course of history, it has been little recognized and rewarded. Henceforth this design focuses on revealing the significance of one of India’s greatest feats in the numerical universe. This design will ensure that people will recall this achievement more often. It’s a well known fact that “zero” is essential to begin the whole number series and no currency denomination can survive without this number. We Indians can be very proud that we were the ones who introduced this number to the Mathematical world. So this design included this number to flaunt one of our major contributions to mankind. Now the existing representations of the Indian Rupee are in variegated formats like “INR”,”RP”,”Rs” etc. One thing to be noticed here is that the alphabet “R” has become a crux of our currency representation in all the above mentioned acronyms. Hence this design mandates this letter “R” as an essential part of it. Our Indian culture and civilization is one of the oldest known to human beings and Devanagiri lipi and Sanskrit language are the well known roots for the other existing modern languages. When we look deep into this design it can be observed that the letter “R” in a way appears like the Hindi or Sanskrit word “Ra” and having one edge of the “zero” bordering it makes it appear like the Hindi or Sanskrit word “Ru” which is the beginning letter for the word “Rupiah” in Hindi and “Rupiah” is the well known root word for the term “Rupee”. Hence this design ensures that our ethos is well designated. Moreover this design is easy to write and provides no hassles in interpretation even by a layman.

This notation/symbol is used in mathematics as
≡ is identically equal to, defined as, congruent.
It can be typed in word/writer.In note pad it will be typed as “a” and here in this window also. Apart from the symbolic meaning given by Shri Khatri the other aspect is, HOW IT WILL LOOK IN MATHEMATICAL EXPRESSION LIKE ≡100.00+≡20.00=≡12.00 ?!

Because when it’s going to get printed on currency it will only look like this

    ≡100.00

Down below is comparison with other world currency symbols :

    ………………. | ≡1000.00 | ………………

I think now with the final tally being around 2500 entries, the ministry could go something really exiciting. I would love if they put up all the entries, with explanations, without the designers’ details, on the net and let the public vote for their choice. So at the end, there will be a popular choice as well as a judges choice to go by. Can anyone suggest this to them?

An IIT Bombay student is among the five people whose designs have been shortlisted from across the country for the new symbol for the rupee.
The designs created by Udayakumar Dharmalingam, along with those by four others, will now be scrutinised by a panel of seven jury members.

They will decide on the final design from among the entries submitted to them on December 15 at the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in New Delhi.

Speaking about his ideas being selected, Udayakumar said he had been designing fonts for different Indian languages and hence, decided to enter the competition when it was announced in March 2009. “I made hundreds of designs keeping in mind the conditions mentioned. While the most common designs that came to mind were those on the lines of the dollar or pound, but they did not give a look that matched the cultural and historical ethos of the country as mentioned in the conditions of the competition.
Hence, I made new designs, out of which I finalised four and submitted them,” said Udayakumar who is pursuing a doctorate from the Institute of Design and Calligraphy at IIT Bombay.

As the competition did not put any limit to the number of entries per person, Udayakumar submitted two entries after sending a demand draft of Rs 500 for each each.

Each entry could have two options and hence, Udayakumar submitted four options. It is unknown as to how many entries were received by the government, but after the first round, 2,500 entries were shortlisted
that was the news ,but from where comes Mr.Udayakumar Darmalingam, can anyone search in selected list by finmin?

I hope Mr.S.Raut has not gone into exile and he is still attached with the finance ministry. I have certain questions and i hope that he will answer the same.
1)Sir can u please tell what are the exact number of entries received by your department. As per your statement some 25487entries were received however finally some 2600 odd entries were shortlisted. What were the basis of discarding thousands of entries.By no stretch of imagination one can digest the above fact.
2)Sir,as per ur original number of entries, all the participants were supposed to get participation certificate somewhere by Jan2010, now with this reduced numbers by now all the eligible applicants should have received them. why delay?
3)When,Where and how many sittings were conducted by 7 members jury and what were the parameters of selection. Are u sure that each and every entry has been thoroughly analysed and if so will u take the pains to declare the marks/grade obtained by each applicant.
4)Sir dont u think that ur department is totally confused with this competiotion. I will give u one example .In the guidelines u have said that entry has to be in the National language script or visual representation whereas u have told BBC,Hindustan Times that it could be in English too.
5)Sir,how the Deccan Chronicle came to know about the final 5 even before it was available on ur website. Why it did not came in Times of India,Economic Times and for that matter in all the newspapers where u have given advertisements.
6)Right from the begining there was a doubt about the authenticity of this competition and u are responsible for this as u have never taken the pains of clarifying the vague guidelines
7)I am 100% sure that some body will definately go to the court of law and u will be solely responsible for the same.It is amply clear that u have purposely kept the guidelines vague as to create the confusion. You have cleverly drafted the clause in other conditions that winner will have to deal with any dispute and controversy.Sir,normally the decision of jury is final and binding but u have smartly avoided it.
If ur department doesnt come out clean on this u will have a tough time in the court of law.
I dont have any personal jealousy towards the final 5 but they will also agree that there was a total mess in conducting this competition.

    8) Uday Kumar has sent two entries with each entry having “two” options. So on the whole he has sent 4 symbols.. But as per the guidlines a participant can send only two Entries… So how was he selected under eligibility list…??? Shouldnt he be disqualified for having sent 4 options..??
9)How did deccan come to know that Uday kumar has been selected in the final five when it was not published officially by the finance ministry..?? Does Uday kumar have any link with the jury..???
10)Nondita & Shibbin’s name & address is not found in the eligible list.. Did you find it.? If you find pls give me the numbers…

    Lucky Shortlisted Names :

    1. Shri Hitesh Padmashali

    2. Shri Shahrukh J. Irani

    3. Shri D. Udaya Kumar

    4. Ms. Nondita Correa-Mehrotra

    5. Shri Shibin K.K.

Note : Above top 4 candidates are form Mumbai.

    http://finmin.nic.in/the_ministry/dept_eco_affairs/infrastructure_div/message_symbol_final.htm

Few Questions i like to ask Fin. Ministry Here are as follow :

Q1 : How the Deccan Chronicle came to know about the final 5 even before it was not available on Fin. Minstery Website.

According to Fin. Ministry guidelines entry has to be in the National language script or visual representation whereas, Fin. Ministry spokes person told BBC,Hindustan Times that it could be in English too.

Q2. Why Fin. Ministry changing its own guidelines and to benefit whom?

Shortlisting of entry from MNC Adv. Company like JWT (5 entries came from same company employees)can cause biased final result. As Big MNC Adv. Company they can easily influence the final result to get more business in coming years.

More info on company here : http://www.afaqs.com/perl/resources/adagency/index.html?id=39

Q3. Why not Fin. Ministry put top five entry symbol in public domain and let people vote for best one?

I once again want it to make amply clear to all that I do not have any personal grudge against the final 5.In a competition everybody knows that all can not win but at the same time there should not be any iota of doubt in the minds of so called loosers that they were not eligiblle to be their at the top and this is possible only when the competition of this nature is organised in a meticulous manner. The points which I have raised in my previous entry, if they are wrong please tell me, i am ready to apologise to one and all.I know some of my friends who have put in their best efforts in this competition. It is not the case that iam shedding tears for them for not making it to the top but one can’t convince their mind about the authenticity of this comp.only because of the unprofessional manner of the organisers.can aybody convince their mind that auditing, sorting, selecting of the entries can be finished within such a less time and specifically taking into consideration the time when the (1st,2nd,2nd and final list-here also i do not understand why there was so much of confusion in releasing the list)were released.
One of the Gentleman above has said that the winning participant has told Deccan Chonicle regarding their selection.Shame on the organisers .Majority of the selected participants are from Mumbai, why they have not told it to the other leading newspapers of the state/country .The things like this cast a serious doubt
regarding the whole affair. No one has seen the symbols of the selected 5, let us hope and convince our mind that they are the best among thousands and outstanding among them be declared as a winner because they had also put in their efforts in this process .Afsheen,I am not at all interested in wasting my time and money by going to court.Afsheen it is not the case that my friends entry is not there,or ur entry is not there,it is the case of justifying onself of all that is happening. If we are wrong in that aspect let us apologise and celebrate with the winner because it is that the country -its pride comes first. But amidst all the confusion on behalf of the organisers, still it is difficult to believe. Am i right Afsheen?

First of all I would like to say that they should have given enough time for people to create a symbol. People had just one month’s time(from March 6th to Apr 15th). Also, many expert designers would have come to know only about 2 or 3 weeks later because it was not publicised thru ads. I think they should have given atleast 3 to 6 month’s time for people to think and create. By now I am sure many more people would have come out with better ideas for the symbol. I hope they don’t do a final selection in a hurry.

To give an opportunity to rest of the people and to all those who want to submit better designs for Rupee symbol, I would suggest thay they do one more round of calling of entries. What do you think? I think people should ask them to do this. I am sure many more worthy designs would come out. It is after all better for our country to have a currency symbol that has come out after an elaborate thought process.

    @Jayesh,
Yes It is a VERY GOOD SUGGESTION to invite entries once again from Indian citizens. It was not publicized properly earlier. In fact many people i came across came to know very late just before deadline. You need time to really think through all facets of India.

Economictimes was also misleading. It asked for voting and also invited symbols from ET readers. I am sure those who sent their symbols to editor of economictimes would have wasted their effort because they would not have been accepted by Finance ministry, as there can be no payment of Rs 500 and no synopsis and no biodata etc.

Only in economictimes it came out prominently. How many creative designers would be reading economictimes online version.
So, the whole thing was not managed properly. They should conduct it again considering the old entries while inviting new entries from all Indian citizens, including those who participated earlier.

people should write to Finance ministry to invite entries once more to be fair to all.

Total Number of Design Recived by Fin. Dep : 25487

Total No. of Final shortlisted Design : 2644

Which is approx 10% of total design Recived..

Total No. of Final shortlisted Design from Mumbai : 265

Which is again 10% of total final shortlisted design.

AND NOW, out of Top Five, 4 are from Mumbai which is 80%.

When we add everthing final result look so suspicious to me !!

    @Rohan,

The reason is that many good creative designers from other parts of India would have come to know of it late as it was not publicized properly. Only economictimes showed it in the first page but that was also not informative. It did not mention how on should apply. It did not talk about finmin.nic.in.

Government should be fair to all. They should invite entries once again to give an opportunity to everyone. By now many people would have come to know about it and would have thought of some good designs. But whatis the use? They cannot submit it.

It is in the interest of the government and India that they invite fresh round of entries from citizens of India.

Afsheen, I have never said that u are jobless.I am sorry and express my apologies if that impression u got from my writing. That apart I fully agree with u regarding the 4 entries indirectly sent by U.Darmalingam thereby violating the guidelines which are self contradictory in many aspects. As per Bharat Dhingra’s above entry it is very clear that fin.ministry has told Navbharat Times that 10 best entries will be selected. What is going on?
Another thing which is clear is that all 2644 entries
are eligible in all aspects so that means a safe conclusion can be drawn that the final 5 designs are better than the best or cut above the rest.
Will finance ministry take the trouble to display all the symbols corresponding to each applicant with their explainations, mark/grades on its website to put rest to all the confusion.

4 entries sent by Udaykumar against the guidlines.. So how did he get selected in the first eligible list..?? &Yeah… as the Navbharat Times had published earlier they should have published the top 10… I really wish that the finance ministry publishes the symbols along with the script & their qualification… & why are all the four final symbols is from Mumbai…?? As i have said earlier the best solution to put all the confusion to an end is that the fin ministry display all the symbols with its explainations and marks/grades/ or whatever criteria that the jury of 7 members have selected for all the 2644 entries so that the whole world knows whether the final 5 entries are cut above the restor not.If the finance ministry has nothing to hide they should definately accept this demand.

    ET hindi 28 Augst 2009
    विशेष संवाददाता ।। नई दिल्ली
    http://hindi.economictimes.indiatimes.com/rssarticleshow/4944416.cms

I am surprised how 7 people of Jury can decide what India should use as currency symbol. This is a democratic country and we people will have to use this symbol everyday. Even if it is not possible to go in for an elaborate voting process with Indian public, they should take the help of at least say 100 to 1000 experts and professionals in arts, design, business and economy and perhaps other areas from various parts of India and get all these entries voted by them based on a SET OF CRITERIA. This way BIAS can be avoided. These experts need not be from Government organizations. They serve as volunteers in the selection process. To make matters easy this voting can happen in an online manner with all images and texts scanned. These experts should be provided online access with unique login id and password for them to access and vote. On every criteria they can give a rating of 1 to 5.

It would be still better if even the uploading of the symbol with online payment is made available to people like us.

The results of the voting should be made available to Indian public anytime through this portal. Let’s propose this to Government. They should not do this selection in a non-transparent manner. We have to stop the flawed process that is going on right now immediately.

They should also invite fresh submissions for the sake of those who missed the previous opportunity.

    How is this idea ?

I am not a regular reader of national dailies.Has anyone came across the news of final 5 in other papers except Deccan Chronicle. Is fin. ministry waiting for an auspicious muhurt for giving this news.Fin. ministry has set a bad example of how a competition should not be organised. As far as 4 out of 5 contestants are from Mumbai i.e quiet possible provided if the doubt raised by Mr.Rohan is true than it is a big slap on the face of remaining participants.Scams are not new to this country. If for some or other reasons the whole project goes into contoversy the entire nation will be a looser. What about Mr.S.raut-Winner or Looser?

I already compared both documents in pdf writer and did not find any differance. Only change made is this they removed spaces between names and put more names on single page.

If there is a well planned conspiracy then they will not leave any evidence behind. There is no point in starting this process all over again by asking fresh entries. There will be no end to that.Nobody from the fin. ministry is giving any explainations to this and most probably no one will come forward.I have a serious doubt that whether Mr S.Raut has given the above statement regarding the number of entries and cost involved in giving ads.I feel that somebody else must have given this news otherwise by now he would have come out with some explaination.

    1. ask for date of submission for every application. this should be authentic taken from the envelope and the actual letter sent by applicants.

    2. what happened to entries submitted to economictimes. were they considered?

    3. the basis of rejection for every symbol in that 2600+ list.

1)How was Uday Kumar eligible when he has sent “4″ entries..? How can he be selected under the eligible list when the guidline clearly says that a participant can send “only” 2 entries….(Point 7 under the finmin guidline)
2)How did DECCAN CHRONICLE come to know about one of the finalist even before finmin can officially publish it
3)How did Deccan Chronicle come to know of a SINGLE name (Uday Kumar) and not the other four…
4)On what basis/criteria was these five symbols selected.?
5)As this is an all India competition, how come the top 4 finalists are from Mumbai alone..?? Aren’t there any other talented minds in other states..??
6)Ask for the complete list of assesment..
7)When the last three names were missing in the first august list, how did it suddenly reappear..???
If you have any more questions pls include… & pls do keep us updated… !!!

My suggestion to the fin.ministry is that all the eligible participants (2644) should be given an opportunity to explain their creativity to the Jury. For this 8-12 centres can be selected in the whole country.4 centres in the metros i.e Delhi,Mumbai, chennai, Kolkata and remaining 8 centres to be carefully chosen across the country taking into account the states from where the participants come.A participant will go to the nearest centre and explain his/her design. All those who could not make it in the 1st round, 2nd and final round shall be kept in Mumbai.A participant will have to be informed in advance regarding the centre and timing where he has to go and explain.A time table will have to be prepared in this respect and should be made available on the fin.min website and also separately communicated to each and every participant. There should not be a substantial change in the guidelines however benefit of doubt should be given to all those entries who might have got influenced by the newspapers information. The scheme of selection should be as follows

    DESIGN-50 MARKS
    CONCEPT(THEME)-50MARKS
15-20 minutes time shall be given to each participant, this way easily 20 participants can be covered in a day .Even 20 days a month this is done ,400 participants can be covered , the whole process can be over in 7-8 months. The entire list of marks will be made available on the website. In case of tie between some entries, it will be referred to the financial experts and their opinion will also be taken into account.
Some changes can be made this time. instead of 7 members, jury will comprise of 8- 8th being the retired judge of the court. The decision of the jury this time shall be final and binding and the decision shall be beyond the purview of judicial scrutiny.
This is the correct and elaborate , inclusive procedure where there will no doubts.Even participants wont mind if they are charged 100-200 extra for this but there will be satisfaction and no scope for disputes.Heaven will not fall if there is a delay in selecting the rupee symbol. But if in the present scenario fin ministry makes haste in selecting the symbol there will be tough time ahead as lot of litigation will come from all over the country and organisers will have sleepless nights as they have not mentioned the jurisdiction in case of disputes in their guidelines.

@aakash, the idea seems good. but i think the problem with this is that the jury are also employed people. so, i don’t think they can be dedicated to this work fulltime for 7 or 8 months. if they do this part time, then the process will get extended to a great extent. May be they can do a first shortlisting of around 500 entries that are better than the rest in their opinion and do as you said. if nothing comes out they can go in for next 500 best entries. they should also allow a new symbol from the participant.

otherwise, to reduce time and give a chance to everyone they should have a 2 level jury team. the first level will be in each metro and finish initial screening and reduce the number of entries to about 50. the second level jury can evaluate these 50 entries and select one. for this to work, the first level jury team will be around 28 people considering 4 metros and 7 members for each metro.

Jayesh, I fully agree with u. As far as the presence of all the members in the jury in the proceedings is concerned,it is not necessary that all 8 have to be present, some of them can see the proceedings later by playing the recorded things. That is why I just thought of 20 days a month but ofcourse if there is a will this can be expedited.

i think majority of the first level filtration from 26000+ entries to 2644 entries may be due to entries without fee of Rs.500, synopsis and biodata. this would have happened in the case of entries accpeted by Economictimes website. if this is the case then it is a real shame that even ET is not aware of the basic minimum requirements for participation in the contest.

As far as Mr S.raut is concerned, this fellow definately exists in fin .ministry as his name has appeared at the end of advertisement published in the newspapers. So far as the statements made in this blog by him, I have a doubt whether they are made by him or not because I hope he is not a fool to give this number of 25487 entries by taking into account the entries received online/ via economic times as common sense says that the entries received without fees has to be rejected and there was no provision of sending entries online or making payment online.

B.S.RAWAT is the correct name.I do not think that he has made any statements in this blog and as far as thousands of participants sending the entries without fees is concerned it is simply unbelievable.Considering entries without fees online is out of question for the reasons i have stated earlier.Doubts raised by Afsheen regarding Amer Knowing the information of 5 participants being informed even before it was made available on the fin website is valid. Is Amer a relative/friend of any of the final 5 or this information is made available by one of the 5 participants in the name of Amer. One more Gentleman has stated that the final 5 were intimated on phone most probably on mobile/reg.post.Has any one found the contact no of this final 5 corresponding to their name in the list.If not from where the fin min got their numbers. There will be no end to this questions. What is the latest update on this. What happened on 15th of december in RBI.

By making an application under RTI and asking for specific information, the department has to furnish the information within 1 month. If the applicant is not happy or all the information asked for is not provided then an appeal lies to appelate authority designated in that department. This becomes the base for filing a suit in the court. In the present case I am sure thousands of participants are not even aware of all that is happening. Once the designs becomes public and if they do not comply with the guidelines then you see the reaction from the public. I could sense the litigations coming from all over India, as the very hint given in the news that the design is a mix of national language script and roman script.Roman script?

English or roman script is not in national language list. So, it can not be accepted.

It seems that Ms. Nondita Correa Mehrotra, one of the final 5 had written to RBI in 2005 that India need a currency symbol of its own and see the coincidence that her design is in top 5. She is a daughter of renowned Architect Mr Charles Correa, of course that doesn’t disqualify her to be their at the top but can definately influence the Jury. .I do not know how many participants are aware about the news of final 5 and how many are reading this blog. This battle has to be taken out of this blog to print/electronic media. As the news came in Navbharat Times that final 10 entries will be selected, can Mr.Bharat Dhingra write to the editor of nav times asking Mr.B.S.RAWAT to give explaination for this news.

for ’selection of rupee symbol’ and should also include the designs of 2644 participants with brief explaination for 10%(25) best entries. After all we are the fortunate participants selected for the rare prestigious contest of country where prize does not matter. It will be proud for us if all the designs with name may be visible to whole country as a part of above proceedings.
In anticipation with kind consideration by Finance Ministry,

@Afsheen, Dear sorry for delay in filing RTI as i am working on some design project and busy in digging more about this whole fixed competition.

One of our friend from chetan emailed me down below information at my email address designer_rohan_in@yahoo.com

Out Of Top Five Finalist 4 Are Under Scanner because :

    1. Hitesh Padamshali is a creative director, design, at JWT’s Mumbai office.

    2. Shahrukh J Irani is a creative director at Publicis Ambience.

Above both worked for very influential Creative MNC agencies with full political back support. Winning this design competition means more business for them.

3.D. Udaya Kumar already told Deccan Chronically that he submitted 4 design entries and according to Finance ministry you can only submit 2 entries. So technical he should be disqualified according to guidelines .

    4. Nondita Correa-Mehrotra – She told Economictimes that back in 2005 she written to the RBI regarding we should have a symbol for the rupee… Even Economictimes in its article mentioned “one of the finalists, more marvelling at the coincidence of it all than implying it may have influenced the government.”.

    http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/markets/forex/Contest-to-finalise-Rupee-symbol-down-to-final-five/articleshow/5350545.cms

Update u guys ASAP i draft final copy of RTI.

Mr Rohan has managed to get important information regarding the background of final 5.
congrats Rohan. One thing is sure that by filing RTI one can get the information asked for but fin.min can not be prevented from declaring the winning entry.I have spoken with my lawyer friend in this matter, he was of the opinion that only after declaring the winner, one can challenge it.There is no need to press the panic button at this stage because a suit can be filed and stay order can be brought from the court even after they declare the winner. There are many weak points on which the claimant can focus and request/pray to the court for fair/trasparent evaluation of all the eligible entries. But for that the winning design has to be out. Finally a happy and prosperous 2010 for one and all.

Most probably it is going to happen the way MrDinesh has predicted.Since she had suggested to RBI in 2005 that we should have a symbol for currency, the authorities should have asked her only to suggest a symbol and accept it.The other thing which strikes is that though the entries were invited fron the professionals as well as non professionals, the jury could not find any entries worth to be their in top 5 from non professionals design. It appears that the idea behind seeking the designs from general public is to arrange for the finances for the expenses incurred on ads and fees of the jury.I stongly feel that all the designs except those which were already fixed are thrown into the dustbin minus the DD.The dept just waited for three months and released the name of final 5.

I have seen the symbol of Mr Soumen on some other website. It is outstanding.I am sure that many designs of the participant would have clashed with each other but it is the concept which could have separated the best from the rest.only few designs like soumen are available on the net otherwise no one knows the creativity of thousands. As far as teaching lesson to the govt, first let them declare the winners and see the symbol but somehow I feel taking into consideration the history of scams and their results,we are fighting against a dead wall.

they made it a contest to collect rupees as aakash said. and also to avoid complaints from other professionals that they were not given a chance and if given a chance they would have created a better design than Nondita. now the contest seems to have become a power game between atleast 4 out of the 5 winners. whoever has better clout or show better deal wins. also by now they would have given dummy marks to all entries submitted by others so i do not know how RTI will help.

ET news, Pl read all 2644 and coment

“I had written to the RBI in 2005 saying we should have a symbol for the rupee,” said Nondita Correa-Mehrotra , one of the finalists, more marvelling at the coincidence of it all than implying it may have influenced the government.

Correa-Mehtorta is a Harvard University-trained architect and works at her father’s firm—Mumbai-based Charles Correa Associates. The final list pits two leading advertising agencies against each other for the big honour—JWT and Publicis Ambience.

Hitesh Padamshali is a creative director, design, at JWT’s Mumbai office, while Shahrukh J Irani is a creative director at Publicis Ambience. The list also has a typography scholar in D. Udaya Kumar, a PhD candidate at IIT Mumbai’s Industrial Design Centre. He is preparing to defend his dissertation—Transformation of Tamil letter forms from palm leaf manuscripts to early letter press printing—early next year.

Shibin KK, a computer science teacher at a government higher secondary school near Thalasserry, Kerala, is the fifth finalist, and an outsider of sorts with no formal training in drawing or design. However, he takes up freelance design work.

For the five finalists, it’s a agonising wait till the symbol is unveiled.

It is ridiculous that they have selected symbols by just looking at the symbol and not the synopsis, irrespective of what the design actual meant according to the designer. The fact that they had decided to take just 2 days to meet and go through all entries suggests that this contest was an eye-wash and pre-decided.
Answer to question 2 says: designs do not have any language. Then what does the condition Design should be in National language mean ?

From the day one I am closely following this great Indian bureaucracy tamasha . By profession I am concept head and brand strategy planner… in my career I launched national as well international brands
What I noticed and learned is… failing of brand and not getting recognised in market as a brand ….
Not only depends upon how you marketed that brand….but also how much efforts your creative powerhouse taken to create that image…
So to create a successful brand identity the whole process of brainstorming and vibes of designers should be clear from all kind doubt and blames.
But its oposit here in designing of rupee symbol case, whole process came under doubts from the day one because of its very confusing and unclear guidelines.
And lately RTI filed by someone from design field which exposed other discrepancies in short listing process too. More than 800 shortlisted entries were never been published in public domain…. while declaring eligible number of shortlisted design entries.
So, finally I set with my advocate and drafted down below Open RTI application… which any one of you could file it..
It takes us 3 working days to understand what really going and finally drafted all our queries on paper.
We divided queries in 4 separate RTI’s because some time authorities rejected RTI application by saying you are asking too much information.
RTI is a best tool to fight bureaucracy and injustice …making an application under RTI and asking for specific information, the department has to furnish the information within 1 month. If the applicant is not happy or all the information asked for is not provided then an appeal lies to appellate authority designated in that department.
Later on this becomes the base for filing a suit in the court.
Let me make it very clear here guys we the Young and creative mind of India is not so dull to follow a mute justice!!
We are lucky to have one last chance, as a RTI ….to make some positive change for the betterment of our Currency symbol design and by participating in this exercise we can get our dignity back…
    So guys file RTI Now…
Step By Step Guidelines – How to File RTI for “Symbol for Indian Rupee” Under RTI ACT 2005:
    1. Download the editable RTI file from here – http://www.scribd.com/doc/25924085/RTI-Symbol-for-Indian-Rupee-Design which includes total 4 numbers of RTI’s by clicking above link.

    RTI INDIA
That was only a tip of iceberg …. So now stop shouting and act now…..
    File above RTI …..

Remember the are doing this to you and hurting you dignity because you let them do it !!! So stop talking and start acting…. I am socked as well earlier every one shouting here about injustice and now while we did all the homework for you guys, now one got balls to file it what a shame….

dear all, what are we asking and what are we reading. Even if u ask them regarding the 4000 entries as per Business Standard news they will come out with some impotent explanation. So called evaluation of entries without reading the explanation and that too with a mind blowing speed and now to decide among the final 5,they have lost all the energy to decide the best.I think the Godfathers of final 5 are fighting with each other for the crown.

@aakash: I feel you’re right. Godfathers must be fighting with each other with offers and counter-offers. I do not know whether any newspaper or media agents are trying to probe into this now. Media should be informed about this and asked to probe. Unless somebody like that gets into this and probe it thoroughly, truth will not come out. I’m sure all jury members, including JJ arts etc., must be getting something out of it.

At the same time we should be prepared with questions to be asked before court once it comes to the stage of dragging them to court.

Do they really need Rs.500/- to evaluate the designs at this furious speed.?.

Also the criteria spelt out by an RBI official to Business standard (design should reflect brand value of India and suitability for trading internationally) is not same as what was given in the contest circular(historical and cultural ethos).

Auspicious Muhurt of Budget to declare the winning design for symbol for rupee is missed by the Finance Minister. He has mentioned in his speech regarding the symbol for rupee but I do not know whether he is aware of the fraud played by the bureucracy. More than 2 months have passed since the declaration of final 5 entries but to decide the final winner there is so much of maramari obiviously for the reasons i have stated earlier. Media at least now is aware of such competition organised in the wake of budget speech and can probe in this scam/fraud.

    My dear Friends,
We need to wait for the answers from Finance Ministry which we asked Under RTI.
Open RTI posted here in comment section was filled by many of us from all over India. Finance Ministry NOW, very well aware that many of us are watching this whole process. And I assume that’s the main reason why they don’t declare the winner as every day they are receiving RTI in this regard.
Even if they declared the winners still any of us could go to court so don’t panic. As every one knows we guys got detailed evidences in this matter too.
By making an application under RTI and asking for specific information, the department has to furnish the information within 1 month. If the applicant is not happy or all the information asked for is not provided then an appeal lies to appelate authority designated in that department. This becomes the base for filing a suit in the court even if the result were already been declared.

i don’t know why there is delay in announcing Rupee symbol. i read somewhere on the budget day that NID is giving finishing touches to the rupee symbol that has been selected. This may be taking them some time, before it is presented to finance minister etc. For RTI, I think the account of how much money has been spent and in what way and how much is in hand with ministry should also be asked for under RTI. Participation certificates were supposed to be given to all by december, i don’t think anybody got it.
Also, the synopsis of our symbols should have been read by jury but they didn’t. How can they understand or conclude about a symbol without going thru the synopsis.?

People of me country I hope we all should criticize this concept of our Govt. to charge for such a creative work rather they should give some reward or award or may be write the concerned person’s name on some of the country constitution’s page for giving country’s currency symbol. According to me we should not send any of our design attached with DD of 500/- to the govt. May be it is the right way to criticize the power holders. Otherwise I am myself a designer but don’t want to pay to sell my art and that on the call of my country’s Govt. Thanks

It is quiet clear that the answers are given by a smart person. But the oversmartness on their part is exposed in some answers. For example 16(D),the answer is that all the designs were not given marks/grades.It appears that the Jury has closed their eyes and selected the 5 entries at random and the same are available on the website.
All the jury members will become a necessary party in the suit as they are hand in gloves with the mastermind. They must have thought that no one is wathching the proceedings and they will execute their plan. With RTI applications, now they are exposed. They have betrayed the confidence of the people of this country and some of them are top officials of RBI.Shame.They will have to pay heavy price for this. I hope media is investigating and that is why they have delayed the declaration of a so called winning entry and even if they declare, court proceedings is a writing on the wall.

I am trying to understand how the 7 member jury would have evaluated the designs. If it starts with one person from jury and he says ok or not ok then it has to be passed on to next member who gives his opinion and so on till all 7 say ok or not ok. Now comes the question of whether the design gets shortlisted. what is the criteria? Is it based on majority saying ok? Have they done that? I don’t think so.

The above procedure is the simplest process i could think of.

First of all, just saying ok or not ok is itself not enough for a fair evaluation to happen. Each member should give a grade in the scale of say 1 to 5 for every design and then the total marks obtained should be found out to do a fair evaluation. Obviously this has not happened.

I looks like they have rejected all except these 5 in one go. How is it possible without giving some sort of grades to each.

And it is a ’strange’ coincidence that nondita’s design got shortlisted among these 5 entries !!
