firefox-logoFirefox is really superb browser, great support of addons, themes for your taste, faster browsing, etc [Must read : Why Firefox is better that Internet explorer] Apart from that, firefox also have tweaking support for software hackers or tweakers using about:config .

Many times while switching in between tabs, we accidentally click the close button in tabs. So here is the trick to avoid these accidental clicks on cross close buttons. We can change or move the position of that cross close button in firefox or even we can remove it from tabs.

so follow these steps to hack your firefox.
Open new blank tab and type about:config in address bar and press enter.

This will ask you about warranty volition, Ignore that and click “I will be careful, i promise !” and yes be careful while editing anything in this.

Now search for browser.tabs.closeButtons in column “Preference name”.

Now set the value as per following table and needs.

  • 0:Display a close button on the active tab only [I am using this]
  • 1:(This is Default) Display close buttons on all tabs.
  • 2:Remove close buttons from all tabs [You can close tabs using middle mouse click]
  • 3:Display a single close button at the end of the tab bar (Firefox 1.x behavior)
  • To change the value just double click on the row.

Nice tweak, though I still like the current placement of the close button on Firefox Tabs :)

While on the topic of close buttons, is there a way to totally alter the close button. Personally it would be a nice idea to have the X button on the lower right, beneath the up-down scroll, to close the window/tab once I finish reading a page. Just wondering if that is horrible gui design philosophy or if it exists somewhere at all. I find it painful to finish reading a page , go up right corner and click X, esp when using the laptop touchpads.

Thanks for the tip. With middle-click for close, there’s just no need for all those close buttons taking up space. For Sudhar, there’s a fairly straightforward solution to close a tab when you reach the end of a page: you just hit Ctrl-F4
